Another totter he knew called 'Joe' who enjoyed a drink or six!!, would sometimes meet Wilfrid in the local boozer and they both stayed there to closing time where they would carry and place drunk Joe into the back of his cart.
Joe's horse on its own would trot all the way back to his yard which was situated in Kensington with a sleep in the back.
This is very similar to what happened in the Steptoe episode 'The Loathe Story', where Albert after a good nights drinking was carried from the skinners arms and thrown into the back of his cart.
Wilfrid must had mentioned his experiences of his totter friend 'Joe' to Galton & Simpson, wonder if he did?
Another coincidence is Wilfrid knew a person called 'Ned Gallagher' who they nicknamed 'Old Ned'.
Its possible that the Steptoe & Son theme tune may have been named after Wilfrids friend?
Most of this information was obtained from Wilfrid Brambell's Autobiography which really is a super read.
In 1972 the first major film was made "Steptoe & Son" and what a film it was!
Between filming Wilfrid was interviewed and said "I'll never be able to face another meat pie again!!".
This was due to a number of takes in the scene when Harold is waiting for Zita's postcard and Albert is tucking into his meal of meat pie, mash and carrots.
The filming for that scene started early that morning and by 1pm that afternoon, Wilfrid had eaten his way through
six plates of food due to the out takes and whilst leaving the set for a well earned rest Wilfrid said : "As for potatoes carrots and gravy and white bread and butter, I've never really liked all those starchy foods!! but after this I'll not be
able to eat for a week at least and when I do its me for the protein every time!!".
